The Finch: Chapter Twenty Two
Chapter Twenty Two
Georgia felt herself against the side of the ship. She was in the corner between the side of the ship and the wall that was on her left. In the darkness of the bandages on her eyes, she tried to comprehend what was going on.
She could almost see herself, standing, looking at herself. She was on a ship, prisoner of some woman, being taken somewhere. She felt like she went from one world to another. In her mind, she thought about the morning, and lowering the Finch down to look at the panels on the Flying Fish. She thought about being a pilot, about transporting things and doing surveys. Then she thought, that in just the last few hours, in just a few minutes, everything had changed. She couldn't understand.
She wondered where the woman was taking her. Why? Why was she so intent? She thought about calling out and saying something, but realized the woman wouldn't listen. She had an impulse to move, to escape, but thought that unless she untied herself and overcame the armed woman, there was no place to go.
Georgia tried to breathe. She thought of Hugo and his woven knots. He seemed relaxed when she saw him count them. She tried to imagine in her mind, herself counting knots. She could see herself sitting in the ship, as if her hands were untied, counting them. She tried to breathe more slowly.
She tried to focus. She saw the ship in her mind. She saw the space she was in. She figured the cockpit was to her right and the engine was to her left. She was in an open space except for whatever was stacked next to her. She thought that if the woman was flying the ship, that she couldn't see her.
She tried to think about what she had. She had nothing with her. All she carried, she carried in her belt. She tried to think more. She had boots, with laces. She had necklace. It was metal. She had a bracelet on her left wrist. It was metal. Her shirt had ties on the neck. She had ropes around her ankles. She had ropes around her wrists. She had a bandage around her eyes. She was next to something metal on her side. There were panels on the wall on her other side. She tried to think about it all and fit things together in a way that would help her.
She tried to listen. She could hear a fan somewhere. She tried to listen more. There was no sound from the woman. She either had closed the door of the cockpit, or she wasn't making any noise.
Georgia tried to feel how she was. She didn't feel like she was moving. She though that the ship must be going at a constant speed in one direction. She hadn't felt it move or tilt or land.
She tried to think about where the woman would take her. She put herself in the woman's place. This woman and the Flying Fish thought they were attacked. This woman thought that she, Georgia, was one of the attackers. She tried to think what the woman wanted. She thought that the woman had said that she had stopped or taken care of or, something that she couldn't remember, the other ship. She wondered what the woman had done. She saw the Ptarmigan in her mind chasing the other ship and firing at it. All she could think of, was that the woman had destroyed the other ship and that whoever was on it, had been killed. She wondered why the woman hadn't killed her. She thought about how the woman could have easily done it. She wondered if the woman would do it later.
Georgia heard a voice.
"Parinpe, Tower C3, LRF 243, at tone Ohee time, 163500."
There was a pause, and she heard a tone.
Georgia tried to think. "She is taking her position," she thought to herself. Georgia wondered where the woman was going. She wondered why the woman was going there.
After a few minutes, Georgia heard the voice again followed by the tone.
After another few minutes, she heard it again, followed by the tone.
Georgia figured that the woman was checking a map to find out where the ship was. Georgia tried to imagine the map in her mind and figure out where she was. She couldn't imagine the detail though.
After a few minutes, Georgia felt the ship move. She thought that woman had altered her course. She tried to understand where the woman was going.
