The Finch: Chapter Four
Chapter Four
Georgia sat down in her cockpit chair. She put on her belt and harness. She held her hands to her face and then pulled them down. She felt a lump in her throat, and could feel her eyes swell with tears. She tried to catch her breath and feel calm.
She checked her altitude. They were at two thousand feet. Her compass said they were pointed north. She checked the battery sensor, it was still almost full. The indicator for their cannon shots remaining, showed that it was almost full as well. She glanced to her right and saw that the field one and field two lights were on. The radio light was on, and the short incoming and outgoing frequency setting was set. The long range frequency setting for the radio tower they had looked up was also set. She looked at one clock and saw the local time.
Georgia sat back in her chair, breathed, and put her hands on the controls. She then pressed on the speed control and slowly brought the Finch to two hundred miles per hour. She went forward for a while and tried to think about what she needed to test.
"We need to test reverse," she thought to herself. "We need to test landing and taking off."
Georgia stopped. She held her head down, and felt tears fall on her pants.
She looked up again, and thought, "We have not practiced weapons in flight … I wonder how hurt he is."
She kept her hands on the controls and thought, "We have not practiced different defense combinations." She could see Hugo in her mind, lying on his bed in pain.
Georgia took her foot off of the speed control. She sat for a second and then turned the Finch south.
